GENAP Collection

Generative Art & Photography

One of the most important art movements of postmodernism is "Generative Photography," whose art-theoretical foundation also forms an important basis for the discourse on digital art and "Post-Photography. The GENAP Collection is a comprehensive collection of Generative Photography with important blocks of works by Herbert W. Franke, Gottfried Jäger, Karl Martin Holzhäuser and Pierre Cordier. Selections from a Swiss private collection are shown here.

Birth of Computer Art

Beyond photography, Generative Photography has close links to the earliest cybernetic art movements of the 1960s. At a time when the first man walked on the moon and Konrad Zuse's first mainframe computers were being put into operation by companies like Siemens, artists were also eager to explore their artistic development possibilities with electromechanical technology.
